Historical Society Meeting Schedule

Meetings will be held at Pierce Memorial Methodist Church unless otherwise noted.

Our Guest Speakers for 2026 Quarterly programs are free and open to the public. Invite a friend and attend!

April 26 - Program: Georgia Silver. Our speaker is Jim Marshall, who will talk about Georgia silver and silversmiths. Mr. Marshall is the President of the Eatonton-Putnam County HIstorical Society. Did you know Sparta had two silversmiths in town in the 1820s and 30s? Please plan to attend this fascinating talk about Silversmiths of Georgia.

August 1 - My Family Heirloom: Ask an Expert. Saturday August 1 from 10 am-3 pm. Hosted by Sparta Hancock Historical Society. Linton Schoolhouse 12547 S. Linton Rd., Sparta Ga. $10 entrance fee. Bring your favorite family heirlooms for an "Antiques Roadshow" type identification event, with experts in categories of militaria, documents, jewelry, furniture (photos only needed) and Native American/archeological finds.

August 2 from 3:00pm - Our speaker from the Georgia Humanities Circuit Greg Brooking will join us in celebrating our 250th commemoration of our country with a program on the Loyalist side. Hosted by Sparta Hancock Historical Society.
Location: Historic Linton Schoolhouse, 12547 S. Linton Rd., Sparta Ga.
Program: Sir James Wright and Loyalism in British America A fresh examination of Georgia's last royal governor, revealing how loyalism, diplomacy, and political tension shaped the colony in the turbulent years preceding the Revolution. Dr. Brooking is the author of From Empire to Revolution: Sir James Wright and the Price of Loyalty in Georgia. Our program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Business meeting to follow for all interested.

November 1 - Dr. Jeffrey Wells, Director of the Online Campus at Georgia Military College. Topic TBA soon.

We are adding speakers to our meetings to provide an educational element, especially since we are beginning our 250th birthday celebration of our country. Topics can be on any aspect of history from this time period. We are always looking for speakers, either from our membership ranks or from others. So if you have a topic you want to talk about, or can recommend someone please contact us. Come and bring a friend.
